Federation remembers PC

South Wales PC Jeffrey Pitman died on this day in 1969.

Jeffrey was just 21 when he became the first South Wales Police officer to die while on duty.

He died in a motorbike accident after being called to an incident on 12 August 1969.

Jeffrey joined the cadets at 17 before becoming a PC two years later.

A year before he died, he was awarded a Queen’s Commendation for brave conduct after being shot at during an armed burglary.

South Wales Police Federation chair Phil Walker said: “The loss of any officer is always felt by the whole force and, in fact, the whole police service.

“But it was particularly tragic that Jeffrey was just 21 when he died and clearly he had a very promising police career ahead of him.

“As a Federation, we remember Jeffrey today but also keep his family, friends and colleagues in our thoughts too.”
