Avoid a New Year debt hangover

Police Mutual is encouraging officers to plan and budget this Christmas to avoid a debt hangover in the New Year.

It has published a new factsheet offering guidance on how to save for Christmas and how to manage your money when the bills come in.

Steve Treharne, chair of South Wales Police Federation, said: “Christmas is a time when spending can easily get out of control. Even if you haven’t been extravagant, it takes a lot of planning and budgeting to avoid the January Christmas debt hangover.

“Christmas should be about spending time with your loved ones not the stress and expense of buying the right gifts.”

The factsheet includes guidance for a financial detox, a way to reduce or stop your unwanted spending habits.

It includes tips on budgeting, planning for financial outlay during the year and areas you could cutback or make savings.

There are also tips on checking standing orders and direct debits, cutting down on online spending and where to get debt help if you need it.
